(27 Aug 2018) Over one thousand union leaders and other protesters took to the streets of the Philippines' capital on Monday to demand the government address labour issues.
The workers, whom President Duterte has lauded as heroes, scored the President for reneging in his campaign promise to end the widespread practice of short-term employment as well as not abetting the rising inflation in recent months.
The demonstration in Manila marked National Heroes Day, which honours those who fought against Spanish rule.
The protesters are also demanding that the government address the issues of low wages, unemployment and cracking down on trade unions.
